Americas,Canada,Politics, Thu, 23 Aug 2012 IANS

Ontario (Canada), Aug 23 (IANS) Legislators across the political spectrum from around Australia will converge in Melbourne Thursday, joining hands in their fight against corruption and for integrity in government.

As the Australian national chapter of the Global Organisation of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) hosts its inaugural working meeting of legislators, for two days the parliamentarians will engage in deliberations to advance anti-corruption efforts across Australia.

They will focus on the role of independent anti-corruption commissions.

'GOPAC Australia is pleased to be hosting this ground breaking event, which brings together members from the federal and state parliaments,' said John Hyde MLA, Chair of GOPAC Australia and convenor of the event.

Charles Chauvel, chair of GOPAC New Zealand, will also be participating, to collaborate on a broader anti-corruption action plan for the region, said GOPAC in a release quoted by Marketwire.

GOPAC is a worldwide alliance of parliamentarians working together to combat corruption, strengthen good government, and uphold the rule of law. Based in Ottawa, Canada, the anti-corruption organisation has 50 national chapters on five continents.
