50 Taliban killed in NATO drone strike

Kabul, Aug 18 (IANS) At least 50 suspected Taliban militants were killed Saturday when a pilotless NATO plane bombed Afghanistan's eastern province of Kunar, Xinhua reported.

The drone targeted four vehicles in Shinallai area of Chapa Dara district around 1 p.m., killing the militants, that included 13 local commanders, police said.

Hattiqullah, the Taliban's "shadowy police chief" for the district, and another leader Turabi were among those killed.

The Taliban, which launched an spring offensive against Afghan and NATO forces in May, did not comment.

In another attack, the head of a district prison in the southern province of Helmand was also killed Saturday.

Ismail Khan, head of the Gereshk district prison, died when a sticky bomb attached to his vehicle went off near the prison compound around 1 p.m., police said.
