Brazilian Gomes battles 'anxiety' before Olympic marathon

Brazil,Sports, Tue, 07 Aug 2012 IANS

Rio de Janeiro, Aug 7 (IANS) Brazilian medal hopeful Marilson Gomes admits he is "fighting to control his anxiety" ahead Sunday's Olympic marathon.

Gomes knows he must keep his emotions in check before the 42.195 km event through the streets of London, reports Xinhua.

"To compete on the last day of the Olympics is special, even more so because this is the event that officially closes the Games," Gomes said.

"Athletes always need to contain their anxiety no matter where they compete but at the Olympics it's even harder to do because of the extra importance."

Gomes, 35, is a two-time winner of the New York City Marathon and was a gold medallist in the 10 km event at last year's Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Favourites to take gold Sunday are Wilson Kipsang (Kenya), Ayele Abshero (Ethiopia), Emmanuel Mutai (Kenya), Dino Sefer (Ethiopia), Getu Feleke (Ethiopia) and Ryan Hall (USA).
