London, Aug. 5 (ANI): After many women in the United Kingdom complained of being jeered by men while walking down the streets of that country, a frustrated Belgian film student has made a documentary on women in Brussels facing a similar plight, and described walking through its streets as equally miserable.
The documentary, called 'Femme de la Rue', by Sofie Peeter, was submitted by her for her final student project, which makes for a disturbing account of the everyday sexism on the streets of Brussels.
Peeter, a Brussels film academy student, used a hidden camera to record many of the scenes and also interviewed other students to learn more about their similar experiences.
However, the film student who made the documentary said she is hopeful about it having a positive impact in reducing sexism and breaking the silence about the subject.
"These advances hurt me a lot, and I had the feeling I was on my own. Primarily, I would like to see that more women comprehend that they are not the only ones but that this affects a lot of women," the Daily Mail quoted Peeter, as saying.
It has now also been broadcast live on Belgian TV, the showing of which started a flood of testimonies from women on Twitter telling of similar experiences.
She said that she received 70-80 testimonies by e-mail corroborating her experiences after putting a request on the Internet for other women, who have been through such experiences, to get in touch. (ANI)
