Jail food makes me fat, says British prisoner

United Kingdom,Human Interest/Society, Sat, 04 Aug 2012 IANS

London, Aug 4 (IANS) A prisoner at a jail in Britain has complained that the food being served in prison - comprising chips, pies and rice - was making him fat.

In a letter to the Inside Time magazine, prisoner John Bowskill from the Dorchester jail said he was desperate for some non-fatty food, The Sun reported.

Bowskill, who had been a personal trainer before being jailed, said he was finding it difficult to breathe after piling on weight with the "high glycemic index" diet he is fed.

"Do I have a right to stay fit and healthy while imprisoned," he asked in the letter.

A prison official said jail food "needs to be cheap and easy to cook", and therefore they cannot cater to individual preferences.
