Venus, Baghdatis continue Olympic charge

London, July 31 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Venus Williams continued her confident performance in the Olympics tennis competitions with a second-round win over Aleksandra Wozniak here Tuesday.

Unseeded Williams encountered little resistance from the Canadian player, ranked 52 in the world, hitting 32 winners against Wozniak's seven to race to a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

Williams, five time Grand Slam champion on the Wimbledon courts where the Olympic tournament is being played, beat ninth seed Sara Errani of Italy in the first round 6-1, 6-3.

In the third round, Williams, the Sydney gold medallist, will face seventh seed Angelique Kerber of Germany.

Kerber, 24, swept past Hungarian teenager Timea Babos taking her down in less than an hour 6-1, 6-1.

Elsewhere, Richard Gasquet, seeded 16, was toppled by Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus in the second round.

World No.45 Baghdatis demonstrated good serving skills and with 14 aces against Gasquet's five to grab a 6-4, 6-4 win.

Baghdatis, 27, will face either British hope Andy Murray or Finnish veteran Jarkko Nieminen, who are to play on the Center Court later Tuesday.
