Beijing, July 31 (IANS) Up to 25 people in China's Anhui province have been sentenced to prison or put under surveillance for administering illegal foetal gender tests and abortions, a court announced Tuesday.

The People's Court in the Shushan district of the Hefei city Monday held a public trial for the suspects, including Liu Caiyun and Wu Chunhong, who were charged with illegally conducting birth control-related medical operations, Xinhua reported.

Liu received a two-year and nine-month sentence and was slapped with a penalty of 150,000 yuan ($23,800) while Wu, the other man, was jailed for two years and three months and also fined 100,000 yuan.

Both were apprehended last November while conducting abortion surgeries of three women. An investigation later revealed 23 others being involved with them.

The group carried out gender tests and abortions of nearly 100 pregnant women over the last three years, raking in large amounts of money, the court said.
