Beware of cameras while smoking in Shanghai

China,Immigration/Law/Rights, Sat, 28 Jul 2012 IANS

Beijing, July 28 (IANS) In a bid to make people abide by the 'no smoking' rule at public places, police in China's Shanghai city have increased the number of surveillance cameras to catch lawbreakers.

The step has shown good results with more smokers inside internet cafes being caught and fined in the second quarter (April to June) of this year compared with the previous quarter, Shanghai Daily reported.

Internet cafes, restaurants and karaoke parlours are the public places with the most violations of anti-smoking law in the city. Smokers who refuse to put out their cigarettes can be fined up to 200 yuan ($31) for breaking the city's public smoking control law, effective since March 2010.

Between April to June, the number of fined violators and the penalty amount have grown greatly, thanks to the surveillance cameras.

The city police punished 81 internet cafe managers and 53 customers for breaking the law. The fines added up to more than 70,000 yuan (about $11,000).

The internet cafe owners were fined for letting customers smoke inside or failing to put up non-smoking signs as mandated by the law.
