Brazil to invest in individual sports to boost Olympic tally

Brazil,Sports, Sat, 28 Jul 2012 IANS

Rio de Janeiro, July 28 (IANS) Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has outlined plans to focus investments in individual Olympic events to lift the country's medal tally at the 2016 Rio Games.

Among the initiatives is the construction of 6,000 new multi-purpose sports courts with an additional 4,000 facilities already in existence to benefit from undercover protection, Xinhua reports.

"Brazil is very strong in team sports but it's in the individual events that most of the medals are won," Rousseff said. "We need to improve in that area because it could make a big difference."

The president declined to put an estimate on how many gold medals she expected Brazil to win in London.

Last week, Brazilian Sports Minister Aldo Rebelo revealed a 20-medal target, five more than the Brazilian Olympic Committee's goal.
