London, July 27 (ANI): Two officers in UK's Metropolitan Police Department are to be charged with a racially aggravated public order offence, over comments they allegedly made while on duty.
David Hair and Kevin Hughes, both serving in the Met Dept. in Newham in East London, have been accused of making the racist comments in front of other officers.
According to The Telegraph, Hair, 40, faces two public order offences, one of which is racially aggravated, on February 22, while Hughes, 36, also faces two public order offences, one of which is racially aggravated and allegedly took place on March 13.The decision to charge the officers came after an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) following a referral of the complaints in April, the paper said.Both officers are due to appear before Westminster Magistrates Court on September 5.New Met Commissioner, Bernard Hogan-Howe, declared his determination to stamp out racism in the force and urged officers to report their colleagues if they made inappropriate remarks.
