Islamabad, July 25 (ANI): Unidentified gunmen attacked NATO supply trucks, killing a truck driver and injuring a conductor, in Jamrud town located in Pakistan's Khyber Agency.
"Two armed men riding on a motorbike opened fire on a container carrying supplies for NATO troops across the border and killed its driver," the Daily Times quoted local administration official Bakhtiar Khan, as saying.
Another administration official said the truck was part of a convoy of three or four vehicles travelling without security protection when it came under attack.
The driver, identified as Atta Muhammad, received a bullet in the head and two in the chest. He was rushed to Jamrud Hospital where he later died.
"We have advised the drivers to move in large convoys. We are also telling the customs department to avoid sending one or two trucks," Khan said, adding that security for the trucks was to be beefed up.
A militant faction called Abdullah Azzam Brigade has claimed responsibility for the incident. It warned drivers and conductors that their group would carry on such attacks against them if they continued NATO supplies to Afghanistan.
The attack came a day after a U.S. drone attack on a compound in the northwest killed at least 10 militants.
The NATO routes were reopened on July 3 after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said 'sorry' for the deadly U.S. air raid along the Afghan border that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers last November. (ANI)
