Maryland. July 11 (ANI): Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai has handed himself over to prison authorities after he was sentenced by a Virginia court on charges of tax evasion, for taking money from a foreign government and trying to influence American policy.
According to The News, Fai will be kept at a minimum security prison for two years followed by three years of supervised release.
"I made a mistake, but Kashmir cause is wise. Kashmir cause has not been affected, people came to know that it's an important international issue," he said.
Fai's imprisonment was delayed because he had requested to attend his child's graduation ceremony.
He was sentenced to two years in prison for accepting money from Pakistan's ISI to fund his illegal lobbying efforts on Kashmir.
Fai was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on July 19, 2011 for conspiracy to defraud Washington by concealing the transfer of at least 3.5 million dollars from the Pakistani spy agency to lobby and influence the U.S. government on the Kashmir conflict in violation of Foreign Agents Registration Act.
