Yangon, July 10 (Xinhua-ANI): The military parliamentarians group in Myanmar's parliament Tuesday nominated Yangon Region Chief Minister U Myint Swe as a candidate to run for Myanmar's new vice president to succeed U Tin Aung Myint Oo who has resigned for health reason, military parliamentarians said.
The outgoing U Tin Aung Myint Oo was one of the country's two vice presidents, and the other is Sai Mauk Kham.
The nomination, made in line with the 2008 constitution, needs to be approved by the parliament.
Myint Swe, 61, an ethnic Mon, was a member of then ruling State Peace and Development Council in 2001 with a rank of brigadier-general when he was appointed as Southeastern Commander.
He was later promoted to major-general and Yangon Commander.
He took over as head of the new military intelligence agency in 2004, while retaining his position as Yangon Commander.
In 2005 he was further promoted to lieutenant-general.
In 2006, he was named chief of Bureau of Special Operations-5 responsible for security, military, political, economic and social tasks in Nay Pyi Taw and Yangon.
In 2009, he was promoted to quartermaster-general of the armed forces.
The fourth session of Myanmar's two-house parliament, which has been underway in Nay Pyi Taw since July 4, announced the resignation of former first vice president U Tin Aung Myint Oo for health reason and election of a new first vice president in seven days to succeed him under the 2008 state constitution.
