London, June 26 (ANI): Ecuador's Foreign Minister has said that government lawyers are studying the political and legal implications of granting asylum to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Minister Ricardo Patino, however, did not mention when a decision might come.

According to The Daily Express, Ecuador's envoy to Britain returned to Quito over the weekend to discuss the case with Patino and President Rafael Correa.

Assange took refuge in Ecuador's London Embassy last week in a bid to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning in the alleged rape and sexual assault cases.

Assange denies the charges and claims he is being persecuted politically.

The whistle blower website founder said he fears the United States will seek his extradition from Sweden. (ANI)
