Canadian govt. agency proposes law to crackdown on foreign criminals

Ottawa, Thu, 21 Jun 2012 ANI

Ottawa (Canada), June 21 (Xinhua-ANI): A Canadian government agency proposed on Wednesday the introduction of a new legislation to get tougher on foreign criminals in the country, said a minister.

Foreign criminals won't be allowed to "endlessly abuse Canada's generosity," said Jason Kenney, minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism as he put forward the Faster Removal of Foreign Criminals Act before the House of Commons.

The act would facilitate automatic deportation of refugees, immigrants and visitors to Canada who are convicted of a crime and are sentenced to more than six months in prison. They would lose their right to appeal a deportation order.

In the past, convicted criminals have often launched numerous appeals, often on humanitarian or compassion grounds, prolonging their stay in the country and delaying court-ordered deportations.

"It's time to send a clear message to foreign criminals that if you commit a serious crime in Canada, we're going to send you packing as quickly as we can."

The new immigration bill would also mean that foreigners involved in organized crime, or security, human or international rights violations, such as war crimes, would no longer be able to delay or stop their removal by seeking a government exemption and permanent relief for cases "deserving of humanitarian and compassionate consideration," Kenney explained.

The spouse or other family members of a foreign national deemed inadmissible on those grounds would also not be allowed entry into Canada, even if they are traveling alone.

Meanwhile, anyone caught lying on an immigration application would not be allowed to enter Canada for five years, rather than the current two years. (Xinhua-ANI)
