Pakistan to get new PM by Friday

Islamabad, Wed, 20 Jun 2012 ANI

Islamabad, June 20 (ANI): The Pakistan National Assembly would elect a new prime minister on June 22 at 5:30 p.m., said Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Syed Khurshid Shah.

Media reports have been speculating on three possible picks, all members of the outgoing Cabinet, reports The Dawn.

Minister for Water and Power Ahmed Mukhtar and Textiles Minister Makhdoom Shahabuddin have emerged as the front runners.

A coalition party leader who attended Tuesday's meeting at the presidency after the Supreme Court verdict which disqualified Yousuf Raza Gilani as Pakistan's premier, claimed that no specific name had been discussed for the next prime minister, except for those which have already been in circulation in the media since the announcement of the court's verdict.

The meeting did take notice of speculations about various names, including outgoing ministers Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar (water and power), Makhdoom Shahabuddin (textiles), Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah (religious affairs) and Qamar Zaman Kaira (information and broadcasting), but no decision had been taken, sources said.

The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, disqualified Gilani from holding a seat in the parliament, which was effective from April 26, the date of his conviction in the contempt of court case. (ANI)
