Johannesburg, June 15 (Xinhua-ANI): With former South African president Nelson Mandela's 94th birthday drawing close, the preparations for national celebration are gathering pace, the official Bua News Agency reported on Friday.
The South African government has invited all citizens to join millions of learners in singing the Mandela birthday song on July 18, the Bua reported.
To honor Mandela's dedication to the education, the South African cabinet has called for all citizens to support the improvement of 94 schools across the country under the 94+ Projects in the campaign of celebration, the Bua reported.
The 94+Projects will include the renovation of school buildings, installation of water and sanitation facilities, provision of desks and chairs as well as fencing of schools for all the 94 identified schools.
Mandela once spoke passionately at many forums on his commitment to providing quality education for all children in the country and a better life for all.
Though the government has made great achievements in improving quality education since 2000, there are still shortfalls in terms of facilities to provide quality learning and teaching environments.
Minister in the Presidency for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation Collins Chabane on Thursday encouraged young people to participate actively and wholeheartedly in the celebration event.
Mandela, born on July 18, 1918, became the first democratically- elected president in South Africa in 1994 after decades of struggle against apartheid.
On Nov. 10, 2009, the UN declared July 18 an annual "Nelson Mandela's International Day" in recognition of his contribution to the culture of peace and freedom. (Xinhua-ANI)
