Khartoum, May 30 (IANS) A British humanitarian worker kidnapped in Sudan about three months ago has been released, the UN African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) said.
UNAMID chief Ibrahim Gambari said in a statement that security authorities in South Darfur state managed to free Patrick Noonan, Xinhua reported.
Noonan, who was working as a supply officer for the World Food Programme (WFP) in Nyala, was kidnapped by armed men from Darfur March 6 along with his Sudanese driver who was later released the same day.
The UN official urged Sudanese authorities to pursue the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
The WFP, for which the freed hostage works, has expressed delight over the release of Noonan. It said Noonan went to Darfur with the aim of helping vulnerable people. His kidnapping was a great strain on his family, friends and colleagues.
