Maldives opposition complains police violence on MPs

Male , Wed, 30 May 2012 ANI

Male, May 30 (Xinhua-ANI): Maldives main opposition led by the former president Mohamed Nasheed on Wednesday complained of police violence on members of parliament (MPs) and peaceful protesters ahead of Friday's all party talks and the inquiry into Feb. 7 controversial power transfer.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) spokesperson for international affairs, Hamid Abdul Ghafoor stated the Indian Ocean island nation has descent into a police state as the Maldives Police Service ( MPS) attacked a group of MPs who were monitoring police move to clamp down peaceful assembly in Usfasgandu in the capital Male.

The police moved into the MDP's Usfasgandu rally ground to find illegal items and evidence of criminal activity and after a search they came up with cigarette ends and a packet of condoms, the spokesman said.

The police were sent by Home Minister Mohamed Jameel claiming illegal activities being performed in the area after the Criminal Court refused forced dispersal of the protest camp.

The police warrant alleged that MDP protesters threw a cursed rooster at army officers last week.

"The MPs at Usfasgandu were there to monitor the situation in order to avoid violence but the police responded by violently removing the MPs, including female MPs," claimed Hameed.

The MDP urged international community to intervene to the rights abuses in the Maldives.

Since the power transfer from Nasheed to President Mohammed Waheed, Maldives has seen a series of violent protests and international organizations including Commonwealth had urged to conduct impartial inquiry into Feb. 7 power transfer.

Nasheed claimed he was ousted in a military backed coup and the government had given an undertaking to the Commonwealth to start all party talks and Commission of National Inquiry from June 1. (Xinhua-ANI)
