Yangon, May 29 (IANS) With the Nepal deadlock over a new constitution persisting, India Tuesday hoped that the political parties of the Himalayan republic would continue to be guided by the spirit of consensus and peaceful dialogue to transform the country into a democratic nation.

"We are closely monitoring developments in Nepal. We note the new constitution could not be promulgated within the extended term of the Constituent Assembly," Syed Akbaruddin, spokesperson of India's external affairs ministry, said in response to a question on the developments in Nepal.

"We have confidence in the democratic commitment and wisdom of the people of Nepal, which has led to considerable progress of the constitution-making process," he said.

Akbaruddin said India hoped that the political parties of Nepal "would continue to be guided by the spirit of consensus and peaceful dialogue in their efforts to transform Nepal into a stable, democratic and prosperous nation".

India reiterated that it was ready to assist, "according to the wishes of the people of Nepal".

The crisis in Nepal has deepened with three parties quitting Nepal's Maoist-led government as Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai Monday called for elections Nov 22 following the parties' failure to agree on a new constitution which was aimed at ending years of instability.
