Beijing, May 28 (ANI): Chinese police have arrested a Communist Party leader on charges of raping minors after bloggers registered online outrage, claiming it to be the latest abuse of power.
Li Xingong, the Communist Party's deputy director in Henan Province, reportedly confessed to assaulting minor girls after a police interrogation.
"The local authorities have ordered swift and severe punishment on the suspect in accordance with relevant laws," The Independent quoted Chinese official as saying.
The authorities did not reveal the age of victims, but said to provide further details as the investigation continued.
The move came as hundreds of pro-democracy activists took to the streets in Hong Kong to mark the 23rd anniversary of the crushing of the Tiananmen Square protests in Beijing.
China's microblogging service, Sina Weibo, became the mode by which people registered outrage over Li Xingong's case before the charges were announced.
Online activism is now becoming a successful platform for exposing corruption in China.
This huge surge in growth is causing the country's leadership to become increasingly worried about the Internet situation.
