Nay Pyi Taw, May 28 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna on Monday said that India needed to work closely with Myanmar to combat militancy.

Krishna, who is accompanying Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on a three-day state visit to Myanmar, said: "There are certain compartments in this relationship one is security related relationship. Both of us are facing same kind of problems like terrorism and insurgency and so hence it is necessary that both of us work out a joint strategy as to how to meet with this terror elements and also the insurgents on either side."

"So, I think we will have to work out an understanding with them. We have an understanding with them. We have been cooperating but I think it is necessary to deepen those cooperation and secondly the economic content of our relationship, which is equally important," he added.

Krishna further said that India would extend all support to Myanmar and ensure that it would tread on the path of development.

"I think Myanmar is a developing country like India. Well, they have come out some internal problems internally and now they seem to be settling down and it is the time for them to devote time to launch on a developmental agenda for this country, as people need it and well India would be willing to assist them in whatever they plan," said Krishna.

Myanmar's government expects two-way trade with India to nearly double in two years to two billion dollars, from 1.4 billion dollars in the year to March 30, a figure that was nearly 30 percent higher from the previous year, according to Myanmar's Ministry of Commerce. By Naveen Kapoor (ANI)
