Washington, May 24(ANI): Indian-American student Dharun Ravi, who was convicted for using a web cam to spy on his roommate while he was making out with another man, could reduce his jail term if he earns credit for good behavior and work behind bars, according to New Jersey corrections officials.
Ravi, student of Rutgers University, has not yet begun his sentence because prosecutors filed an appeal on Wednesday, arguing that it is too lenient.
Officials in Superior Court in Middlesex County say he will not begin to serve any sentence until the appeals court has ruled.
According to the New York Times, Ravi's lawyers are determined to appeal against his conviction, arguing in court that he was wrongly charged and that they should have been allowed to see more evidence.
Ravi's lawyers say a suicide note that his roommate, Tyler Clementi left before he jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge in September 2010 should have been taken into account.
Edmond C. Cicchi, warden of the Middlesex County jail said regulations allowed those who were sentenced to 30 days to cut off up to five days off the term for good behavior and another five days for doing tasks assigned in prison.
Cicchi said judges can order that a sentence not be reduced but Judge Berman's office said it would be up to the parole office to determine whether Ravi could earn recognition for work and good behavior. (ANI)
