5 aid workers go missing in northeastern Afghanistan

Kabul, Wed, 23 May 2012 ANI

Kabul, May 23 (Xinhua-ANI): Five aid workers have gone missing in northeastern Afghan province of Badakhshan, an official said Wednesday. "I do confirm that a group of five medics including two female foreign physicians and three local medical doctors went missing late Tuesday in Yaftal district,"a spokesman for the provincial government, Abdul Maruf Rasikh, told Xinhua.

He said the medics were traveling from Yaftal district to neighboring Ragh district to provide health service for locals there.

Without disclosing the nationalities of the foreign workers, Rasikh said a search operation was launched by police to locate and look for missing aid workers.

Meantime, a provincial official who declined to be named said the foreign aid workers are Swedish and the missing people were working for an aid agency.

It was not clear whether the missing people were kidnapped by armed people.

The relatively peaceful Badakhshan province has been witnessing Taliban-led security incidents since the beginning of spring, known as "fighting season" in the militancy-hit country. (Xinhua-ANI)
