World's tallest tower 'Tokyo Skytree' now opens to public

London , Tue, 22 May 2012 ANI

London, May 22 (ANI): Tokyo Skytree, which is recognised by the Guinness World Records as the tallest tower in the world, has been opened for public viewing.

The Skytree, which measures 2,080 feet in height and is the latest addition to the Japanese capital's skyline, opened after nearly four years of construction.

More than 8,000 visitors climbed the tower on its opening day to take in 360-degree views from the highest point in the city via its two observation decks, the Telegraph reported.

The new tower, operated by Tobu Railway Company, will operate as a new base for Japan's six top television and radio broadcasters as well as a tourist attraction in its own right.

A commercial development also lies at the base of the new tower, which is located in eastern Tokyo, including hundreds of shops and restaurants as well as an aquarium and planetarium.

Officially, Tokyo Skytree is also the world's second tallest building - a different category of structures - after Dubai's Burj Khalifa, which measures 2,717 feet.

Lady Gaga, who obtained a sneak preview of the new tower last week while visiting the capital, is among the first visitors. (ANI)
