Madrid, May 22 (IANS) Spain's coach Vicente del Bosque has called Chelsea pair of Fernando Torres and Juan Mata into his preliminary squad for the European Championships.
Mata and Torres were left out of Del Bosque's original list of 21 players as their club team Chelsea were playing in the final of the Champions league against Bayern Munich Saturday.
Chelsea won that game on penalties and the pair came through with no injuries and have now received Del Bosque's call up.
Torres and Mata will join the squad, which met Monday in Madrid, May 25, a day before Spain plays Serbia in a friendly game, reported Xinhua.
Del Bosque will name his definitive list of 23 players Sunday, May 27, two days after the final of the Copa del Rey between FC Barcelona and Athletic Club Bilbao, two sides who have several Spain internationals in their ranks.
As with Mata and Torres, Del Bosque has not named any players from these two clubs before knowing they have come through the final with no injury worries.
Following a poor season Torres will have to impress Del Bosque, who left him out of his previous squad. His place in the final squad may depend on the form shown by Alvaro Negredo and debutant Adrian lopez and on whether or not Barca's David Villa is able to prove his fitness after suffering a broken leg in December.
