Jakarta, May 18 (Xinhua-ANI): The Indonesian Military is preparing a peacekeeping team to be deployed to the southern Philippines under the command of the United Nations, a statement released by Indonesian military headquarters said on Friday.
"That duty is noble and honorable and will carry the good name of Indonesia in the international scene," Maj. Gen. Hambali Hanafiah, assistant to the Indonesian Military (TNI) commander on operational affairs said in the statement.
He added that the Indonesian task force will participate in the UN's International Monitoring Team.
The task force is now undergoing training at the Peacekeeping Training Center in Sentul, West Java.
It includes 10 officers from the Army, the Air Force and the Navy, seven from the Foreign Ministry and three from the State Intelligence Agency (BIN).
Hambali said the deployment fits with the preamble of the country's constitution, which directs the nation to take part "in safeguarding a world order based on freedom, eternal peace and social justice."
The soldiers' training will equip them with knowledge about the southern Philippines, teaching them about the people and the conflict there.
The training will finish on May 30. Hambali, however, did not say when the task force would be deployed to the southern Philippines.
Decades of insurgency in the southern Philippines have led to a peace accord with one group and intermittent peace talks with another. (Xinhua-ANI)
