London, May 13 (ANI): The jailed former Ukraine premier, Yulia Tymoshenko, may be left permanently disabled after being mistreated by prison authorities, her daughter has said.
Tymoshenko, 51, who is serving seven years for alleged abuse of office, is presently in a hospital after ending a 20-day hunger strike.
Her daughter Eugenia said that a German doctor is treating Tymoshenko because she does not trust the hospital's government-controlled staff.
"Now the German doctor is here she is slowly starting to take food - about a spoonful an hour. She had only been drinking juice and water because she was too scared to take anything else," The Daily Mail quoted Eugenia, as saying.
"The most worrying thing is they cannot start proper medical treatment for another ten days because she is too weak. My mother has to gain more strength first and get her metabolism back to normal," Eugenia said.
"The doctor said if she doesn't start treatment straight away she could be disabled for life. She cannot really walk at the moment," she added.
Tymoshenko is suffering from a herniated spinal disc, a condition that requires medication, injections, chiropractic therapy and possibly an operation.
According to the paper, her supporters released photographs showing bruises and grazes to her stomach and arm, which Tymoshenko claims were inflicted by prison guards during the journey to hospital.
The doctor treating Tymoshenko was sent to Ukraine by the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel.
She has offered Tymoshenko treatment in Berlin and has refused to attend Euro 2012. (ANI)
