Damascus, May 13 (ANI): An Islamist group al-Nusra Front has claimed responsibility for the twin suicide bombings that killed 55 and injured 370 in the Syrian capital.
The attacks took place near a military intelligence building during the morning rush hour on Thursday.
In a video posted online, the group said the bombings were in response to attacks on civilian areas by forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.
The group also claimed responsibility of previous attacks, including one in March on a police HQ and airforce Intelligence, The BBC reports.
"We fulfilled our promise to respond with strikes and explosions," a distorted voice said in the video.
"We tell this regime: Stop your massacres against the Sunni people. If not, you will bear the sin of the Alawites," the video continued, referring to the offshoot of Shia Islam to which Assad and many of the ruling elite belong.
According to the report, the video warned Sunnis against 'living near security buildings and dens of the regime or passing near them'.
Meanwhile, violence has been continuing across Syria, despite a ceasefire being monitored by a team of UN observers.
According to the UN, at least 9,000 people have died since uprising against Assad's regime began in March 2011. (ANI)
