Al Qaeda feared to be taking advantage of chaos to spread terror in Syria

Damascus, Sat, 12 May 2012 ANI

Damascus, May 12 (ANI): The twin car bombings have raised fears that Al Qaeda has taken advantage of the Syrian unrest to infiltrate into the country and target Assad's regime.

Terrorist outfit Al Qaeda's hand is feared behind the serial bombings in Syria that rocked the country on Thursday and killed about 55 people.

According to The Christian Science Monitor, the twin bombings in Damascus resembled earlier attacks that have been carried out by the extremist Islamist organization in the country.

The Syrian Government has also urged the U.N. Security Council to take action in the wake of the blasts.

The government said that there is proof that Syria was facing terrorist attacks that were led by groups receiving foreign support.

However, the Obama administration has blamed Asaad for the bombings.

The US has said that Assad had allowed Syria's political situation to worsen by failing to implement Kofi Annan's six-point cease-fire plan, which calls for an end to all violence and steps towards political reform.

"If the Assad regime were doing what it's supposed to do, which is to lead the way in demonstrating its commitment to the cease-fire, then we think that that would set the tone and we would not be seeing these kinds of violent episodes elsewhere in the country," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

After the bombings, Russia also quickly reiterated its' belief that some members of the international community were going far enough to promote violence in the region by justifying it as international intervention. (ANI)
