Philippine gov't: Military modernization not dependent on US

Manila , Wed, 09 May 2012 ANI

Manila, May 9 (Xinhua-ANI): The Philippines is not relying solely on the United States to upgrade its Armed Forces, a senior government official said on Wednesday.

"We should not be relying so much (on the US) in so far as our acquisition and upgrade of our military equipment is concerned," Philippine Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin told a forum in Camp Aguinaldo.

"If the US has something to give, then it's okay. (But) we have to stand on our own. We believe (that we have to depend on) the resources that we have," said Gazmin.

He noted that the US provided 30 million U.S. dollars in assistance this year to modernize the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The amount, he said, is double the 15 million U.S. dollars previously provided by the US government. (Xinhua-ANI)
