Dhaka, May 9 (ANI): Police in Bangladesh have arrested a teacher from a religious school on charges of burning students' legs with a hot iron rod for failing to pray regularly.
Officials said that 14 girls aged between 8 and 12 had received burn injuries.
"Acting on a tip-off, we raided a house in the old part of Dhaka and we arrested Jesmin Akther, who is accused of burning the legs of her students. We are seeking to remand her in custody for seven days," police officer Shafiqul Islam told BBC.
The school has been temporarily closed after the incident, and the hellish experience of the girls are not considered serious.
The girls learned Arabic and Bengali at the Talimul Koran Mahila madrassa at Namashyampur in Dhaka. The incident is said to have occurred last Tuesday.
The students said the teacher had asked them whether they knew the severity of the fire in hell. They were allegedly told that if they did not prayed regularly, they would experience a similar punishment.
Akther has yet not commented on the issue.
Bangladesh has banned corporal punishment in educational institutions, including religious schools (madrassas), since 2010. (ANI)
