Tehran, May 6 (Xinhua-ANI): Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi underlined the necessity for the establishment of security in the Persian Gulf through extensive cooperation among the regional states, the semi-official Fars news agency reported on Sunday.
"Regional countries should stay together and provide the security of this important and strategic region through cooperation and interaction with one another," Vahidi was quoted as saying.
The Iranian defense minister stressed regional security should be provided without foreign interference.
"Non-regional forces in the region are certainly not taking any steps that benefit regional states and their presence cannot bring security and tranquillity to the people," said Vahidi on Saturday.
In April, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton held talks in Saudi Arabia about plans for a Persian Gulf missile shield system against alleged threats from Iran.
Recent reports also said that the United States had deployed F- 22 Raptors at Al Dafra Air Base in United Arab Emirates.
Senior Iranian military commanders have said the Islamic republic opposes the presence of foreign forces in the Persian Gulf which undermines regional stability. (Xinhua-ANI)
