22 Chinese held for producing toxic capsules

Beijing, April 16 (IANS) A total of 22 people have been arrested in China for allegedly producing and selling capsules containing excessive levels of chromium.
The men was nabbed in eastern Zhejiang province, Xinhua reported.
Police detained 11 suspects from four capsule manufacturing companies in Xinchang county, a major pharmaceutical production hub. The others were arrested Sunday.
On Sunday, a report by China Central Television (CCTV) revealed that several companies in Xinchang produce capsules with industrial gelatin, which contained a greater amount of chromium than edible gelatin and was illegal for use.
Exposure to chromium can cause skin rashes, upset stomach and ulcers, respiratory problems, weakened immune system, kidney and liver damage, alteration of genetic material and even lung cancer or death.
Police have launched an investigation into 43 capsule manufacturing companies.
