Chinese cemetery fined for selling oversized graves

China,Human Interest/Society, Sat, 14 Apr 2012 IANS

Beijing, April 14 (IANS) A cemetery in China will be fined for illegally building and selling "oversized, luxurious and spacious" graves, with some priced as high as three million yuan ($476 million).

Chinese law does not allow any grave -- meaning the room to contain the ash box -- to be larger than 1.5 square metres, the Shanghai Daily reported.

Officials found that the Qingzhuyuan cemetery in Shanghai was selling graves of about 10 to 20 square metres to boost sales.

The most "luxurious and spacious" grave was believed to be sold at three million yuan.

All income from the illegal sales would be confiscated, officials said.
