Labour contracted to make Olympic merchandise exploited at Indonesian sweatshops

Jakarta, Sat, 14 Apr 2012 ANI

Jakarta, April 14 (ANI): Harassed workers are reportedly making Olympic merchandise in Indonesian sweatshops to be worn by British athletes and volunteers during the Games.

The Independent report revealed that workers at nine factories contracted to make merchandise for Adidas were allegedly working for upto 65 hours a week at a meager income of 34p an hour.

According to The Telegraph, the report said that the labour, including mainly young, female employees have claimed that they faced verbal and physical abuse, were forced to work overtime and punished on failing to meet the production targets.

One factory also suspended 10 workers a month ago for forming a union to protest against their exploitation.

The allegations have refuted claims by the Olympics organizers that the Games will be the most ethical games ever held.

Adidas and the London Organising Committee of the Games said that they were seriously investigating the allegations. (ANI)
