Rio de Janeiro, March 29 (IANS) Former Brazilian striker Edmundo has officially ended his professional soccer career, scoring twice in his farewell game at 40.

Edmundo led Vasco da Gama to a 9-1 win over Barcelona-Equador Wednesday.

Edmundo, who played 37 times for Brazil scoring 10 goals between 1992 and 2000, came out of retirement in order to receive his festive and final game, reports Xinhua.

The Vasco da Gama club idol currently works as a commentator and plans to return to the line of work after nearly a month preparing for Wednesday night's match.

Vasco da Gama's opponents were Ecuador's Barcelona, the team's adversary in the finals of the 1998 Libertadores Cup. It was a gloomy damp day with intermittent rain, but that did not stop fans from filling the Sao Januario stadium to bid goodbye to Edmundo, nicknamed "the animal".

After the match, Edmundo thanked the fans for all their love and support during his career.

Edmundo began his career with Vasco da Gama in 1991 and in 130 games he scored 81 goals. He helped the team win the 1992 Rio de Janeiro state championship as well as the 1997 Brazilian Championship.
