Egyptian camel handlers threaten 'siege'

Egypt,Immigration/Law/Rights, Wed, 28 Mar 2012 IANS

Cairo, March 28 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Egyptian camel handlers have threatened to bring thousands of camels to the capital city and block the buildings housing the cabinet and the agriculture ministry if the nationwide foot-and-mouth disease quarantine was not lifted.

The protesters also threaten to block main roads in the south of the country, including those leading to popular tourist destinations and resorts.

The agriculture ministry banned movement of livestock through administrative borders between the country's provinces in an effort to contain an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.

A total of 50,000 animals have been infected with foot-and-mouth disease in at least three Egyptian provinces, and hundreds have already succumbed.

The Egyptian government will consider additional measures to contain the outbreak later this week.
