Argentina's Del Potro dreams of ATP No.1 spot

Argentina,Sports, Sat, 24 Mar 2012 IANS

Buenos Aires, March 24 (IANS) Argentinian tennis star Juan Martin del Potro, currently No.11 in the world ATP ranking, said he dreams of "becoming No.1", though he admitted that the top slot "is very difficult to achieve and few succeed".

Del Potro was quoted as saying by Xinhua that he had two dreams growing up.

"The first, I achieved," he said, referring to his win at the 2009 U.S. Open. "The other is becoming No.1."

Del Potro went on to say: "It motivates me and gives me strength to wake up each morning knowing that the possibility exists. Not a day goes by that I don't dream of becoming No.1."

Nicknamed "The Tower", the 6-foot-6 Del Potro was listed by the ATP among the top 10 players in recent years, but slipped in the rankings after sustaining a wrist injury in 2010.

Del Potro was named "Comeback Player of the Year" in 2011 after rising to the world No.11 spot from a low of No.485 earlier in the year.

In his short career, he has earned upwards of $8 million in prize money.
