Woman fighting Saudi Arabia's ban on female drivers dies in car crash

Riyadh, Wed, 25 Jan 2012 ANI

Riyadh, Jan 25 (ANI): A Saudi woman who defied a ban on female drivers in the country has reportedly died in a car accident.

According to The Daily Mail, another was hurt in the accident that took place on Saturday in the northern Hael province.

"One woman was immediately killed and her companion who was driving the car was hospitalised after she suffered several injuries" the paper quoted a police spokesman, as saying.

Their deaths come after the two women joined a growing number of female protestors who have defied the ban since a high-profile campaign by a 32-year-old computer security consultant Manal al-Sherif.

Al-Sherif was arrested and detained for ten days in May after posting a video of herself on YouTube as she drover around eastern city of Khobar.

Al-Sherif and a group of other women started a Facebook page called 'Teach me how to drive so I can protect myself,' which urged authorities to lift the driving ban. (ANI)
