Washington, Jan 14(ANI): A new poll has shown that former House speaker Newt Gingrich is catching up with leader Mitt Romney in South Carolina for the 2012 White House race ahead of the state's primary.
The Public Policy Polling Poll showed that 24 percent respondents backed Gingrich, as compared to 29 percent for Romney,The Politico reports.
The poll also indicated that Gingrich could be a rallying point for social conservatives in South Carolina.
Ron Paul and Rick Santorum are ranked third and fourth respectively, commanding 15 and 14 percent support.
Rick Perry secured six percent support, Jon Huntsman five percent and Buddy Roemer one percent.
The poll surveyed 803 likely GOP voters between January 11 and 13. (ANI)
