Brit woman fired by BBC for being too old to work wins 150K pounds

London, Wed, 12 Jan 2011 ANI

London, Jan 12 (ANI): The British woman, who took BBC to court after it fired her for being too old to continue working, has won the case and a likely payout of 150,000 pounds.

In a landmark ruling, a tribunal declared that senior executives were obsessed with "ethnic diversity", "rejuvenation" and attracting younger viewers when they decided to axe Countryfile presenter Miriam O'Reilly at the age of 51.

O'Reilly, now 53, had been told to be "careful about those wrinkles" before she and three other women were replaced by younger staff.

As she celebrated on January 11, she said standing up to the BBC had been "the right thing to do, however hurtful, however stressful it has been".

"I never wanted to leave my job ... there are still years in me yet!" the Daily Mail quoted her as saying.

O'Reilly will now consider fresh offers from the BBC, which issued a humiliating apology and said it would be happy to work with her again. (ANI)
