UK's drive of reaching out to Muslims made 'little progress': WikiLeaks

London, Tue, 14 Dec 2010 ANI

London, Dec 14(ANI): The United Kingdom made "little progrss" in reaching out to Muslim communities despite investing "considerable time and resources" after the 7/7 London bombings in 2005, according to classified US diplomatic cables released by whistleblower website WikiLeaks.

According to the Guardian, a cable revealed that the British government's efforts to engage with Muslims had failed considerably as both sides often appeared far apart.

"Since 7/7, HMG has invested considerable time and resources in engaging the British Muslim community. The current tensions demonstrate just how little progress has been made," a diplomat at the US embassy in London wrote in August 2006.

"At the same time, the Muslim community's reaction to the arrests of 24 of its own sons - a knee-jerk reaction blaming HMG - shows that its leaders too have far to go," it added. (ANI)
