Kuala Lumpur, Dec 13 (ANI): Former Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) President Samy Vellu has been appointed special envoy to India and South Asia on infrastructure, barely a week after he resigned from his post.
According to the New Strait Times, Prime Minister Najib Razak announced this while launching Vellu's biography entitled 'A Life. A Legend' yesterday, adding that the country did not want to lose Vellu's talent and that many local companies would surely benefit from the appointment.
Samy Vellu's role as special envoy with ministerial status would reportedly come into effect next month.
Vellu took over as acting President in October 1979, and was re-elected as President for a record 11th term in 2009, for a three-year term ending March 2012. However, he decided to step down before the scheduled time. (ANI)
