Pak will have to take "unpopular decisions" for nation's progress: Gilani

Lahore , Sun, 12 Dec 2010 ANI

Lahore, Dec 12 (ANI): Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has said the government will have to take "difficult and unpopular decisions" to tackle the challenges confronting the nation.

"We have two options - either we become proactive and embrace the challenges head-on with a win-win mindset or allow forces of change to defeat us. However, the first route requires us to make 'out of the box' decisions and reset our national priorities in line with contemporary challenges to keep pace with developments around the world," the Daily Times quoted Gilani, as saying.

Doing so will mean taking difficult and unpopular decisions, which, I think, leadership is all about," Gilani added, while addressing the University of Engineering and Technology's convocation here.

He said global economic and social architecture was undergoing an evolution in the wake of the recent global recession, which had caught the world unawares, as new forces had cropped up and could have a huge impact on the world system.

"The uniqueness of challenges posed to the international political and economic order demands a creative response and innovative approaches as a way out of our predicaments. No country can find an honourable place in the comity of nations unless it is strong internally, and this strength comes from its institutions and quality of governance," he added.

Gilani also said that a strong base to resolve Pakistan's problems had been established by the 18th Amendment, heralding a new beginning for the nation.

"Good governess and better planning should be adopted to improve internal matters of the country," he said.

"The abolition of the concurrent list and devolution of its subjects to the provinces will make Pakistan a strong federation and eliminate duplication of functions and wastage of resources by accelerating the delivery of services at the grassroots," Gilani added. (ANI)
