White British population might be a minority in 2066: Report

London , Sat, 04 Dec 2010 ANI

London, Dec 4 (ANI): White Britons could be 'a minority' in their own country by 2066, instigating observers to question the definition of 'white British', or consider it anachronistic or irrelevant very soon, says new research.

Earlier Professor David Coleman, a leading population expert, had said that failure to deal with the influx of foreign workers would 'change national identity'.

"The inflows of the last decade, which took place with no debate or public mandate, have been more sudden and on a bigger scale than ever before," and if they continue on a similar scale, 'they will transform the demography of this country' to the extent that, in the lifetime of a young person alive today, the 'white British population" will become a minority group, Professor Coleman had said.

The Oxford University professor's warnings have come as the Migration Advisory Board prepares to reveal its recommendation for the Government's proposed cap on immigrants from outside the EU, the Daily Mail reports.

He further stated that the white British-bornpopulation like white English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish-born citizens would reportedly decline from 80 percent of the total now to 59 percent in 2051.

In 2008, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) had estimated that Britain's population to rise to 77million by 2051, and to 85 million by 2083, he added.

Professor Coleman also estimated that over a million additional places would be required over the nextdecade, at a cost of 100 billion pounds, to set up schools, and that if the Government fails to provide adequate schooling to migrant children, they would be unable to learn English and prosper in the same way that past generations of new arrivals have done or fully integrate into society, the paper said.

This leads to the main issue raised by Professor Coleman's article: how to manage the 'enormous change to national identity, cultural, political, economic and religious,' which would be brought about by 'white Britons' becoming a minority group.

"If the changes projected here came to pass, they would be perhaps the biggest unintended consequence of government action, or inaction, in our history. It would be curious if embarrassment or demographic ignorance permitted an old society to marginalise itself in its own homeland without discussing it," he added. (ANI)
