US reaches out India about dangers of possible WikiLeaks release

Washington, Sat, 27 Nov 2010 ANI

Washington, Nov.27 (ANI): The US State Department has reached out to India and some other key governments about a new potentially embarrassing release of classified documents by the whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks, which could harm American interests.

State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said on Friday: "We have reached out to India to warn them about a possible release of documents."

"We do not know precisely what WikiLeaks has or what it plans to do. We have made our position clear. These documents should not be released," Crowley added.

WikiLeaks has said the classified documents to be released would be "seven times" as many secret documents as the 400,000 Iraq war logs it published last month.

The governments of Germany, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Britain, France and Afghanistan have also been contacted, Crowley said.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has spoken with her Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi on the issue.

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, has urged WikiLeaks to stop "dangerous" leaks. (ANI)
