Russian secret service behind 1996 murder of six Red Cross nurses in Chechnya: Ex-agent

London , Thu, 25 Nov 2010 ANI

London, Nov 25(ANI): Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) was responsible for murdering six Red Cross nurses in Chechnya in 1996, a former agent of the secret service unit has claimed.

The murdered nurses, from New Zealand, Canada, Spain and Norway, were working in a hospital near the Chechan capital of Grozny when they were shot dead in their beds in a mysterious night time raid in December 1996.

FSB Major Alexei Potyomkin, who is on the run in Germany with his family, has claimed that he was there at the time and that members of his unit murdered the aid workers in error, mistaking them for Chechen rebels, the Telegraph reports.

They then did their best to cover up the crime and pin it on the Chechens, he alleged. (ANI)
