Islamabad, Nov 9 (ANI): Pakistan hopes that the United States would not be swayed by "power politics" in its support for a permanent seat for India in a reformed United Nations Security Council, the country's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abdul Basit has said.
"Pakistan believes that the US endorsement of India's bid for its permanent seat in the Security Council adds to the complexity of the process of reforms of the council," the Daily Times quoted Basit, as saying.
"Any reform of the council that contradicts the very fundamental principles of the UN Charter including the principle of sovereign equality, of equal rights and self-determination and the principle of collective security would gravely undermine the system of international relations based on the UN Charter principles," he added.
Basit said that India's aspirations for recognition as a global power notwithstanding, "there were reasons enough to discredit this proposed direction... such as India's conduct in relations with its neighbours and its continued flagrant violations of SC resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir".
"Pakistan hopes that the US will take a moral view and not base itself on any temporary expediency or exigencies of power politics," the spokesman said. (ANI)
