"Certain circles" in Pak funding insurgency, prolonging war in Afghanistan: Kabul

Kabul, Tue, 09 Nov 2010 ANI

Kabul, Nov 9 (ANI): The Afghan government has accused Pakistan of failing to help bring peace to the region, saying that "certain circles" there were prolonging the war, and funding an insurgency plaguing both countries.

"The terrorism that has been raging in Afghanistan from more than nine years was likely to continue unless Pakistan joined the world to stop it," the Daily Times quoted Afghan President's Spokesman, Waheed Omer, as saying.

"The stance of the Afghan government has always been that Pakistan can play a very effective role in bringing peace to Afghanistan, the region and Pakistan itself," he told reporters, adding, "But unfortunately it has not yet played that very effective role."

The spokesman was reacting to a question about comments by the US President Barack Obama, who had said during his India visit that Pakistan was making progress against the "cancer" of extremism, but not quickly enough.

Omer said that "certain circles" in Pakistan were whipping up and prolonging the war.

"There are certain circles, unfortunately that are not only not helping bring peace to the region but are instigating insecurity and supporting illegitimate terrorist activities," he said. (ANI)
